Facing the future: how and why to use SPFs

As skincare experts, one of the most common questions we’re asked here at the Derma Clinic is: ‘is it really necessary to use sun protection every day, even in the winter?’ It’s a good question – after all, we live in a temperate clinic in the UK, and for much of the year we’re more worried about getting cold and drenched than sun damage. The short answer, though, is ‘yes’. Here’s why.

Your skin probably sees a lot more sun than you think it does. Harmful UV rays can penetrate clouds, and even glass, so if you spend a lot of time driving you could be at risk. The skin on your face and neck is particularly vulnerable and delicate, and sun damage reduces the skin’s elasticity, resulting in wrinkles and dry, aged-looking skin. Even if you rarely go outdoors during the day, you’re not home and dry – dermatologists in the USA have recently carried out research into the damaging effects of blue light on the skin. Blue light, also called high energy visible (HEV) light, is emitted by screens – such as mobile phones, tablets and TVs. If you spend four eight-hour work days in front of your computer, you’re exposed to the same risks as if you’d spent 20 minutes in the mid-day sun – which is enough to burn.

Spending just a few seconds a day applying a good all-round, breathable sunscreen is the best possible investment in your skin’s future. We recommend using a specific sunscreen, such as Heliocare 360? or Environ RAD, in addition to a moisturiser formulated for your skintype. That’s because moisturisers and sunscreens are designed to do different jobs – moisturiser should penetrate your skin, while sunscreen should sit on top to form a barrier, so if you use a product that combines both you won’t be getting the best out of either of them. A good quality product won’t make your skin feel heavy or clogged – in fact, you won’t even know you’re wearing it. Your skin will, though – and it’ll face a brighter future.
